Tech Talks - SCWIST Quantum Leaps Scholarship

Creating Opportunity with a SCWIST Youth Scholarship

Written by Pooja Moorti, SCWIST Youth Engagement Lead

We are proud to introduce one of our amazing SCWIST Youth Scholarship awardees: Parmin Sedigh!

Parmin was the recipient of our Quantum Leaps grant, a $500 scholarship designed to support students with the costs of organizing a STEM conference at their high school. During these conferences, the organizer will bring in professional women and allies in STEM to present engaging speeches and workshops to the students.

Parmin has applied for a Quantum Leaps grant after noticing that, while her school offered an amazing robotics club and a virtual computer science class, there was little exposure to new and emerging technologies and the career opportunities in those fields.

Putting plans into action

She already had ideas in mind for a conference. Parmin wanted the students at her school to learn about the variety of careers in tech fields, and gain hands-on experience in applicable skills, like coding, that they may not gain elsewhere. There would be engaging speakers, hands-on learning and even prizes. It would be called Tech Talks.

Parmin worked hard over the following months, figuring out topics, coordinating with speakers, and sorting out all the details to put her conference together. With everything organized, Tech Talks was ready to begin!

Talking about tech

Tech Talks took place during the students’ lunch hour from March 27-31, with new speakers coming each day. The event was a huge success. Over 60 students learned about coding with Python, biomedical computing, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and robotics during the first four days and then heard from a panel of tech professionals on the last day to wrap things up.

We’re so proud of Parmin and all the hard work she did to make her Tech Talks conference a reality. Congratulations Parmin, and we can’t wait to see what you do next!
