Job Description

Built on five decades of transformative thinking, the SFU community challenges expectations and embraces the unconventional. By fostering a community of compassionate critical thinkers, SFU sparks change that goes far beyond its campus.

Today, SFU is ranked among Canada’s top 15 research universities by major national and international university ranking systems. It is the first university in British Columbia to be designated an Ashoka U Changemaker Campus due to its leadership in community engagement and innovation and its deep-seated desire to contribute to meaningful change. SFU’s achievements in academics and research are guided and underpinned by a strong financial foundation, which supports growth and development. Its financial position is strong, with an annual consolidated operating budget of $750 million.

With campuses in British Columbia’s three largest cities—Burnaby, Vancouver and Surrey—SFU has 2,500 staff and over 1,000 faculty that deliver world-class programs to approximately 37,000 undergraduate and graduate students. SFU has consistently been ranked as a top employer in Canada. SFU’s scale and continued modernization has created a need to hire a Chief Information Security Officer to lead a department that touches all corners of the university.

In this newly created position, the Chief Information Security Officer is responsible for providing executive leadership to SFU’s communications infrastructure, computational and storage services for IT systems and leading and governing the security of information to ensure University-wide compliance. The Chief Information Security Officer’s portfolio includes servers, storage, networks, systems operations and institutional security, ensuring the provision of a reliable, functional and secure technology infrastructure. The role develops, leads and integrates security and governance practices across IT services to meet compliance standards, protecting the confidentiality and integrity of data and physical IT assets across the University.

Drawing on previous experience as an information security leader in a complex environment, the CISO will be skilled at managing relationships and organizational demands across numerous cross-functional disciplines. They will prudently manage and minimize risks while also working to enable rather than inhibit initiatives proposed by various stakeholders. As an information security leader of one of Canada’s largest institutions, they will also have an opportunity to network with, collaborate, and leverage relationships with peers at other universities and related organizations.

This is an exciting opportunity for a leader to enhance the security capabilities of one of Canada’s most prominent academic institutions, while being surrounded by an environment of learning, creativity, inclusion, and peers who genuinely want to make a positive impact.

With locations in Burnaby, Vancouver and Surrey, each SFU campus is situated within a unique community. The CISO office is located on Burnaby Mountain, offering convenient access to all that the Lower Mainland has to offer.
