Brown Bag Meeting: Career Transitions [Event Recap]

Back to Posts

On November 30, 2011, SCWIST had 29 women in STEM gather to discuss Career Transitions. Guest speakers Dr. Lori Daniels, Dr. Judy Illes, Dr. Jennifer Lynett, Dr. Julie Wong and Dr. Diane Goodman touched on several topics, including transitioning into business, balancing work and family life, the myth of “linear career paths,” combining your interests to carve a unique career path and the importance of knowing your values and sticking to them.

It was a very inspiring session, and participants took some important life lessons from our speakers:

  • Be unstoppable.
  • Don’t sell yourself short.
  • Envision your strengths and know what makes you an asset.
  • Be passionate about what you do, set clear goals for yourself and create those opportunities.
  • There will always be some guilt because you can’t be everywhere at the same time (for your job, family, parents, partner) but don’t let it drag you down.

We would like to send a very special thank you to our speakers, our facilitator Dr. Gulnur Birol and also to Dr. Naomi Fast for helping us with the room bookings this year!

Feedback from attendees:

“Really good panel, glad for the time spent with them. Thanks”

“Fantastic, educational, and interesting”

“Thank you very much, it was wonderful and informative”

“I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Thank you!”
