Purpose:

Complete and be responsible for carrying out synthesis of small molecule targets in the lab with limited guidance and contribute to a safe working environment. Keep an accurate record of all work with an eye to reproducibility and recording of costs.

Duties:

Work Safely
• Setting up and organizing equipment and reactions so that they are run in a safe manner
• Abiding by health and safety guidelines prescribed by governing bodies and the TRC Environmental Health and Safety Committee
• May need help in recognizing potential safety issues
• Keeping an organized bench
• Keeping up with company SOP and safety training

Technical Projects
• Be able to do process development with little supervision
• Contribute to the choice of the correct reaction and/or reagents to improve a reaction outcome
• Understanding and choosing the correct reaction and/or reagents to improve a reaction outcome
• Carrying out: dry reactions, separations by chromatography, straightforward distillation and crystallizations
• Interpreting routine analytical data and spectra independently

Maintaining a Good Level of Productivity
• Organizing time and daily activities
• Making good reaction scale choices, with occasional input from the supervisor
• Completing reactions on a weekly basis at the company average, including work-up and purification
• Advancing 2-3 projects on a weekly basis at the company average

Keeping Good Records
• Keeping a notebook that can be read, understood and reproduced
• Completing paperwork for completed projects is turned in in a timely manner

Act as a Resource
• May be called upon to mentor new hires during their probationary period
• May be called upon to act in the supervisor’s stead when he or she is off work for an extended period

Working Relationships
• Working closely with Lab Supervisor and other members of the chemistry production team to resolve technical with Projects
• Working with Finished Goods & Logistics team and Receiving team regarding materials
• Working with Analytical team regarding product testing
• Working with Maintenance & Facilities Department regarding equipment issues
• Working with Human Resources Department regarding personnel issues and HR policies
• Working with Environmental Health & Safety Department regarding environmental, health and safety issues and policies

Perform other duties
• Performing other duties and complete additional projects as assigned
• Working on several different projects of varying lengths and complexity

Requirements:
• PhD in organic chemistry or a related field
• High-level knowledge of organic reactions and their mechanisms
• Strong ability to search the chemical literature with SciFinder and other tools
• Ability to plan, develop and trouble shoot complex multi-step syntheses
• Expert knowledge in carrying out a wide variety of organic laboratory techniques including, but not limited to, water and oxygen sensitive chemistry, microscale manipulations, modern organometallic synthetic methods
• Experience performing process development and research
• Experience in the extraction of natural products and/or photochemistry is an asset
• The ability to characterize products of complex structure by independent interpretation of spectral data
• Expertise in developing methods for separating complex mixtures and using fundamental techniques and advanced purification techniques such as ion-exchange chromatography, reverse-phase chromatography, and automated purification methods is preferred
