National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week is a time to celebrate and thank Canada’s 24 million volunteers.

This year’s theme is Every Moment Matters. At SCWIST, we understand the impact of volunteers who generously share their time, skills, empathy and creativity. From mentoring programs to event coordination to policy advocacy, their efforts ripple through every aspect of our organization.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every volunteer at SCWIST for their unwavering commitment and passion. Their dedication helps empower women and girls in STEM every day. Thank you for making every moment count and for being a driving force for positive change!

Here are three of the volunteers who make our work possible:

Andreia Oliveira – STEM Explore Facilitator

Andreia, a dedicated STEM Explore workshop volunteer, brings her exceptional expertise as a biomedical scientist to every classroom she visits. With her passion and enthusiasm, Andreia captivates the attention of both students and teachers alike, making each session a memorable and enriching experience. Her engaging delivery style not only sparks curiosity but also fosters a deeper understanding of STEM subjects and making a lasting impact on the young minds she reaches.

Ana Sarkis Fernandez – STEM Explore Facilitator

Ana is a structural engineer who has been leading our STEM Explore workshops since 2023, igniting curiosity and excitement in every classroom she enters. With boundless energy, Ana captivates students’ attention, transforming complex concepts into engaging and accessible lessons. Her commitment to empowering young minds and fostering a love for STEM is palpable in every interaction, leaving a lasting impression on students and educators alike.

Sahar Latifi – Policy and Impact Committee Member

Sahar Latifi is a Data Enthusiast with a solid foundation in software engineering and data analytics. Her expertise was notably demonstrated in the car manufacturing sector, where she managed a software engineering team to deliver software solutions that significantly optimized production processes, enhancing productivity and operational efficiencies.

Beyond her professional achievements, Sahar is dedicated to empowering women in STEM through her volunteer work with SCWIST’s Policy and Impact Committee, where she employs her skills to create data-driven solutions for the organization’s programs and initiatives, including the launch of the Diversity Dashboard.

Outside of work, Sahar enjoys the tranquillity of nature through walks, indulges in cooking, and delves into the worlds of movies and books. She values connecting with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds.
