On October 4, SCWIST had the honor of presenting the Debbe Gervin Memorial Entrance Award at BCIT’s Entrance Awards Ceremony.

The Debbe Gervin Memorial Entrance Award is an endowment established in 2001 by family, friends and the Society for Canadian Women in Science & Technology (SCWIST), with matching funds from the Province of BC, in loving memory of Debbe Gervin, a BCIT faculty member in the School of Computing from 1986 to 1999.

Debbe was known for her spontaneity, sense of fun, her ability to instill enthusiasm in her students and for her strong support of women pursuing non-traditional, scientific and technical careers.  Her untimely death from cancer in 1999 was a loss not only for family and friends, but also for BCIT faculty and students.

The annual income provides an entrance award to female student in BCIT’s Information Technology Professional, Professional Web Developer, Software Systems Development or Technology Support Professional programs. It also provides a bursary available to female students in BCIT’s Information Technology Professional Program.

This year’s award went to Amy Liang.
