Job Description

The Department of Physiology & Biophysics in the Faculty of Medicine (medicine.dal.ca/physiology) invites applications from qualified candidates for a faculty position in Cellular and Molecular Physiology. This position is designated for an applicant who identifies as a woman. The successful candidate will hold a tenure stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, with salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Physiology, Biophysics, or a related field, and a minimum of three years postdoctoral experience. The successful candidate will have a record of demonstrated research excellence in a field related to the study of cell physiology and membrane proteins, as evidenced by strong peer-reviewed publications and participation at international scientific meetings.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a dynamic, externally funded research program studying fundamental cellular and molecular aspects of membrane physiology and biophysics, including, but not limited to, neuroscience, cardiovascular science, cell signaling, channelopathies, or cancer. The research program should complement existing strengths within the Department of Physiology & Biophysics, and lead to research collaborations within the Department as well as more broadly within the Faculty of Medicine (medicine.dal.ca/departments.html). The successful candidate is expected to supervise graduate and undergraduate students and contribute to the teaching and administrative activities of the Department. Applicants should have excellent communication skills and evidence of potential for excellence in teaching.

Current research strengths in the Department include cellular and molecular physiology, neurophysiology, cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology, and endocrinology. We are committed to the success of our members and provide mentoring to new faculty. To support their research program, the successful candidate will have access to newly-renovated dedicated laboratory space, start-up funds, and state-of-the-art core facilities (medicine.dal.ca/research-dal-med/facilities.html). As the top-ranked university in Atlantic Canada, Dalhousie is home to a vibrant learning and research community. The Medical School is blocks away from the main campus and University hospitals, with opportunities for interactions with Dalhousie’s other faculties, such as Science, Engineering, Computer Science, and Arts and Sciences. We are located in the heart of Halifax, a short distance from downtown, the waterfront, and public parks. Faculty members are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package.

Applications must be submitted online and include a Cover Letter, a Curriculum Vitae, a Research Statement that outlines past achievements and future research plans (maximum 3 pages), a Teaching Statement that outlines experience and interests (maximum 1 page), and contact information for three references.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
