Founded in 1974, the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) is a flagship institution in the Université du Québec network, whose mission is the technological and economic development of Québec. Specializing in applied engineering, ÉTS trains 25% of engineers in the province and has a student body of 12,800. It occupies an enviable position in terms of graduation and ranks first among engineering faculties in Québec and second in Canada. The engineers and researchers it trains are recognized for their unrivalled practical and innovative approach.

The École de technologie supérieure de Montréal, one of Canada’s three leading engineering research and teaching institutions, invites applications for the position of Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in the Natural Sciences and Engineering (NSERC), to support the Strategic Direction-Climate Action of its Strategic Research Plan, and to participate in the mission of the AdapT Institute on circular built environment, and resilience to climate changes: AdapT – Research Institute on Resilient and Circular Infrastructure – ÉTS Montréal. The mission of the AdapT Institute is to develop innovative solutions for the design, construction and operation of climate-resilient infrastructures in the context of transition to a low-carbon and circular economy. The incumbent will be called upon to co-direct the Institute.

With the creation of this Chair, ÉTS Montréal aims to strengthen its Strategic Areas – Infrastructures and Built Environments and Sustainable Development, Circular Economy and Environmental Issues. More specifically, the Chair proposal will address issues related to the adaptation of the built environment to climate change.

This Tier 1 Canada Research Chair is for seven years, renewable once, is worth $200,000 per year and contribute to the full funding of the Chairholder’s research.

In addition, the opportunity is offered to submit, at the same time, an infrastructure application to the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) John Evans Leaders Fund program, co-funded by the Quebec Government, with a maximum value of $500,000.

Canada Research Chairs Program requirements

The Canada Research Chairs Program has been established by the Government of Canada to attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising researchers.

For Tier 1 Canada Research Chairs, the candidates we are looking for qualify as outstanding researchers recognized by their peers as world leaders in their field. They must propose a promising and innovative research program, while demonstrating an interest and competence in teaching and supervising graduate students.

We encourage exceptional researchers worldwide to apply for this prestigious Canada Research Chair.
The incumbent will have her/his teaching load reduced.

To meet the selection criteria of the Program, the applicant must:

  • Be an outstanding researcher and world-class innovator whose achievements have had a significant impact in her/his field.
  • Be an internationally recognized leader in its field.
  • Know how to recruit and supervise graduate students and postdoctoral researchers very well, considering the different practices in place in their field or discipline and, once a Chair, be able to recruit, train and retain excellent interns, students and future researchers.
  • Propose an original, innovative research program and of the highest quality.

Expertise

The candidate will be expected to contribute to the creation of advanced technological solutions to modernize the construction industry and to build infrastructures and built environments climate-resilient and sustainable. She/he will have to participate in teaching and conduct fundamental and applied research in the field of:

  • The adaptation of infrastructures to climate changes.

ÉTS Requirements

  • Hold a PhD in engineering or a related discipline.
  • Show aptitudes and an ongoing commitment towards teaching, university pedagogy and skills development.
  • Have an interest in research (disciplinary, interdisciplinary), innovation and knowledge transfer.
  • Be able to plan, organize and develop a project independently.
  • Demonstrate an ability to supervise graduate students.
  • Have a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships, a sense of collaboration and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrate leadership, initiative and excellent ability to communicate and interact effectively and harmoniously with various internal and external partners.
  • Be able to comply with the requirements of responsible conduct of research.
  • Be able to teach in French or demonstrate a willingness to learn the French language and engage in a supported French learning process by ÉTS.
  • With regard to the pool of potential appointments, the committee will also take into account the contribution of final appointments to the achievement of institutional diversity and equity targets, in particular for designated groups under the Equal Access to Employment Program (EAEP).

Conditions

The successful candidate will hold a full-time regular faculty position at ÉTS.
Working conditions are governed by the collective agreement in force.

    • b. The means implemented to propel the institution as a leader in the field of the Chair, and
    • c. Actual and potential impact on research excellence.
  4. A proposal for a research program (3 pages maximum) including the following sections:
    • a. The objectives and main achievements that will be implemented (100 words maximum);
    • b. The summary programming of activities and the contribution to current knowledge in the field;
    • c. The training of highly qualified personnel who will be called upon to contribute to it.
  5. If necessary, a justified infrastructure request (1 page maximum) to carry out your work respecting the maximum amount of 500 000$.
