Science Fun for Students

From country-wide events like Science Odyssey to local community groups, SCWIST’s Youth Engagement team is always working to bring science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to young learners throughout Canada.

SCWIST’s Youth Engagement team recently hosted two ‘Create a Dazzling LED Card’ workshops at Hastings Elementary in Vancouver, where students made their own flashing light-up cards – all with paper circuits!

Hands-On Learning

It’s important to equip young learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in a world increasingly being driven by technology. Hands-on learning experiences are an effective way to engage students and make complex concepts accessible.

The ‘Create a Dazzling LED Card’ workshops were structured to teach students the fundamentals of circuits, electricity and LEDs while encouraging creativity and critical thinking.

Students put together their LED cards using basic electronic components and craft materials. They helped each other troubleshoot their problems when the circuits didn’t work as expected and cheered their success when the LEDs began flashing.

After taking part in the workshop, these young learners not only had a better understanding of the scientific principles behind circuits, they also experienced the satisfaction of bringing their creations to life.

A Bright Future Ahead

As the young minds lit up along with the LEDs they assembled, a clear message resonated: science, technology, engineering and math are not distant, abstract concepts; they are tangible, exciting pursuits that anyone can participate in.

The success of these workshops serves as a reminder that education goes beyond textbooks and lectures, and that by sparking the curiosity of the next generation, we pave the way for a future where innovation thrives and young minds are empowered to shape the world through STEM.
