Recap of IGNITE Yellowknife
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended IGNITE Yellowknife on May 20!
This was the latest stop on our IGNITE national road trip bringing together STEM professionals and Canadian talent. SCWIST’s IGNITE events are hosted in cities across the country and tailored to reflect local context and community priorities. In Yellowknife, we were proud to partner with Skill Sisters/Quantum Leaps youth leaders from the Kimberlite Career & Technical Centre to showcase and celebrate the critical role of youth, STEM and the skilled trades in shaping a vibrant and innovative Northern future.
The evening was opened by the Yellowknives Dene First Nation Drummers and inspiring words from the Honourable Caitlin Celveland, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment and Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, followed by a powerful panel discussion featuring:
- Kelly Brenton, Social Performance Manager, De Beers Canada
- Commander Melissa Desjardins, Director Strategic Engagement at Joint
- Task Force North (JTFN), Northwest Territories, Royal Canadian Navy
- Myles Cane, Senior Vice President, Operations, Summit Air

The energy in the room was electric as attendees explored interactive activity boards featuring discussion prompts and engaged in deep and meaningful networking sessions focused on emerging career opportunities and employment trends. Held in the heart of Canada’s North, IGNITE x Skills Sisters Yellowknife was a launchpad for opportunity, collaboration, and transformation.
Thank you Skill Sisters, Kimberlite Career & Technical Centre, NWT Pinework Ltd., De Beers, and Summit Air for helping make this all possible. We can’t wait to do it again next year!
We’re also incredibly grateful to our event sponsors—Verdi, Wood Manufacturing Council, Anodyne Chemistries, and Ricardo—for their generous support of the IGNITE event series.
