BC Student among the 15 Google Science Fair 2013 Global Finalists

Ann Makosinski, a grade 10 student at St. Michael’s University School in Victoria, has been selected as one of only fifteen finalists in the annual GOOGLE Science Fair and the only finalist from Canada. The GOOGLE Science Fair is a global competition, attracting entries from more than 100 countries. Ms. Makosinski began entering science fairs in grade six and, at the recent Canada-Wide Science Fair in Lethbridge, Alberta, represented Vancouver Island, winning a gold medal. In her current project, The Hollow Flashlight, she designed and constructed a highly original device that converts body heat into light resulting in a steady flashlight beam without the use of batteries or other energy sources.

“Ms. Makosinski is an excellent example of a student who applies and builds on what she has learned from her science fair projects over the years,” says Patti Leigh O.B.C., Executive Director of the Science Fair Foundation of BC. “Science Fairs encourage students to develop long term significant projects.”

The fifteen finalists will be invited to visit the GOOGLE campus in Mountain View, California in September where the final judging will take place and where prizes will be awarded. The Grand Prize includes a $50,000 scholarship as well as an all-expenses paid trip to the Galapagos Islands.
