Reaching New Heights

Written by Julianne Kim, Event Coordinator

On May 10th, 2024, SCWIST’s 5th annual Women in STEM Virtual Career Fair hosted over 1000 attendees and 24 organizations for a day packed with inspiring talks, professional growth opportunities, and helpful workshops.

This year’s event, sponsored by software company Enavate, reached new heights as we doubled the number of attendees and significantly surpassed the amount of participating organizations.

An Inspiring Start

The day started with an opening ceremony with SCWIST’s Past President, Dr. Poh Tan welcoming attendees to the event. Following Poh was Susana Rodriguez, Talent Acquisition Specialist from the event’s sponsor, Enavate. Susana shared stories from her career journey and expressed how inspired she is by Enavate’s ethics and dedication to its employees.

After the opening ceremony and keynote speech, attendees could choose to attend one of two panels, Translating and Marketing Academic Skills to Industry featuring Melissa Dennis from Acuitas, Ann Meyer from adMare Bioinnovations, Maria Khan from CGI and Coral Lewis from STEMCELL Technologies or Cultivating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Women in the Workplace featuring Meghana Valupadas from Winpak Ltd and Bree Milne from Jacobs. Both panels had hundreds of attendees and were packed with insightful and meaningful conversations.

Following the panels was a round of engaging Career Spotlights kicked off by Cheryl Kristiansen, who announced SCWIST’s new project focused on addressing gender-based violence in STEM workplaces. The floor was then given to D-Pace, CSE, Jacobs, and Enavate to speak to the audience about their organization’s workplace cultures and current job opportunities.

After a quick break, attendees were free to explore the exhibitor booths, participate in the Science Communication Workshop or join their registered session with a Career Coach at the Resume Clinic.

A Growing Community

The Career Fair was hosted on Whova, where participants wrote over 3,600 messages, organized 27 meet-ups, and shared 76 photos. We were blown away by the amount of community engagement the event brought on!

Here are some words that attendees shared with us about their experience with this year’s Career Fair:
