Financial Literacy Month
At the end of November we conclude Financial Literacy Month (FLM) in Canada, and this year, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) is highlighting its “Money on Your Mind” campaign to advance the goals of the ‘National Financial Literacy Strategy 2021–2026’.
Financial Literacy: A Key to Equity in STEM
While financial literacy is essential for everyone, it holds particular significance for the STEM workforce, especially for individuals from marginalized groups. Building on the priority theme of CSW67, which emphasized the intersection of gender equality and STEM, CSW68 highlighted the critical role of financial literacy in achieving gender equality.
STEM careers often require extensive educational pathways with unique financial considerations. Many women in STEM lack access to financial education tailored to their needs, which can hinder their ability to achieve long-term financial stability, build wealth, or fully leverage their earning potential. Financial literacy serves as a foundation for addressing systemic inequities, such as the gender pay gap and the underrepresentation of women leadership roles, to support individuals with making informed decisions that align with their personal and professional goals.
