SCWIST Quantum Leaps is a virtual career conference uniquely designed for girls from grades 8-12 interested in or curious to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This conference gives girls a glimpse into what women in STEM fields do in their careers.

During these events, girls can meet women professionals who have been successful in their STEM fields and meet other like-minded girls who have similar aspirations and interests. This event will help them know more about the STEM fields they are interested in and discover new STEM fields. Quantum Leaps also aims to aid students in the transition between high school and higher education.

This particular Quantum Leaps event will focus on women professionals working in careers related to Engineering. Within engineering, topics such as stormwater pond quality management will be discussed. Other topics include tunnel building and ship building. The various applications of civil, instrumentation and environmental engineering will be the focus.

Did these professionals in engineering have a fixed plan for what they would like to do five years after high school? How do they ease into changing their career focus? Did they know that they wanted to pursue these careers when they were in university? Girls will get the opportunity to interact with these women to get the answers they need at the event.

SPEAKERS

Tabassum Maliha Hassan

Tabassum is an internationally trained Civil Engineer based in Calgary. She is very passionate about water management and has obtained a diploma in Integrated Water Management from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Currently, she has started her graduate studies at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University. Her research is focused on real-time stormwater Pond Water Quality Monitoring. This project is a collaboration between the City of Vaughan and IOTICITI, an IoT company. For this project, she will create a seasonal water quality database during the fieldwork and is currently working on chemical analysis in the university lab.

Ashley Galagusz

Ashley Galagusz, P.Eng., is a professional engineer working in the tunneling industry. She currently works for Black & Veatch, a global engineering, procurement, consulting and construction company, as the Tunnel Practice Lead for Northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Ashley has over 10 years of experience in the industry and has worked on design and construction of several large-scale tunneling projects in Canada. Ashley previously worked on a construction site as the Resident Engineer during tunnel construction associated with a new wastewater pumping station in Toronto. Ashley graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and a minor in Environmental Engineering. She currently lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Jyoti Rani

Jyoti has studied Instrumentation and Control System Engineering in India. Currently she works in shipbuilding as an electrical field engineer, where she gets to spend some of her time investigating and troubleshooting electrical-focused multidisciplinary problems on ships.
