XX Evening

By Melissa Montoril

On March 8th, 2012, SCWIST, in a longstanding and successful partnership with TELUS World of Science, Vancouver SCWIST members and non-members alike enjoyed another year of XX Evening; an event where young science, technology and engineering enthusiasts could meet mentors in a range of fields.

It was a formidable evening! About 170 women participated in XX Evening, which made for many networking opportunities. We were honoured to be in the presence of twenty-nine Wonder Women, who shared stories of their professional experiences and life history, providing fodder for decisions regarding the career choices of the participants.

The entire group enjoyed Science World’s open structure like the auditorium, galleries and the famous OMNIMAX Theatre. The event started with a presentation of the Wonder Women’s biographies, and then attendees participated in panel discussions, asking questions about different development and work areas.

After a fun and informative session, the crowd was ushered into a gallery, to schmooze and snack. The event tied up with the screening of a movie about a part of Canada’s History: “Rocky Mountain Express.” This was followed by a raffle.

According to some attendee feedback, the event was:

“So good! (I am) much more positive about my career path now!”

“Fun and well organized!”

XX Evening “Get[s] women together to learn, to enjoy… a wonderful evening. Thanks!”

It was an “Awesome event! …Overall, amazing work! Thanks!”
