Under the direction of the Department Chair, Plant, Food, and Environmental Sciences, this tenure track position in microbiology will contribute to teaching, research, and service in areas related to plant, food, soil, or environmental microbiology. Teaching responsibilities include developing and delivering courses at the diploma, undergraduate, and graduate levels. Courses may include microbiology, food microbiology, agricultural and food microbiomes, and other course related to microbiology. The incumbent will also contribute to academic program development and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, and other highly qualified personnel (HQP). An ongoing commitment to teaching improvement is expected. The focus of research should be on a topic relating to microbiology of plant, food, soil, or environmental systems in an agricultural context. Service to the university, academic community, industry, and governments is expected.

Approx. % of total time | Typical Duties
40% Teaching: Teaching responsibilities include developing and delivering courses at the diploma, undergraduate, and graduate levels in disciplines offered by the Dept of Plant, Food, and Environmental Sciences. These include microbiology, food microbiology, agriculture and food microbiomes environmental microbiology, and other related disciplines. Teaching duties include the classroom supervision of undergraduate students and classroom and laboratory supervision of graduate students. A commitment to ongoing improvement of teaching is expected.

40% Research: The incumbent is required to develop a strong self-sustaining research program in the area(s) of plant, food, soil, or environmental microbiology, with the support of industry partners and competitive research funds acquired from provincial and federal granting agencies. Technology transfer of applied research outcomes is expected.

20% Service activities: The service responsibilities may include acting as Faculty of Agriculture’s Biosafety Officer, active membership on Departmental, Dalhousie University Faculty of Agriculture and external committees, participation in international development projects coordinated by Dalhousie University Faculty of Agriculture’s International, contribution to institutional infrastructure development and research capacity projects.

Required Education and Qualifications

The incumbent must have a BSc and PhD in microbiology related to plant, food, soil, or environmental microbiology or a closely related discipline with demonstrated potential to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program in microbiology and its related disciples. A track record of independent teaching and/or research experience would be an asset.

Knowledge/ Skills Required
The incumbent will be a member of a team of researchers linking issues related to microbes and their role in agriculture (plant and soil), food, and the environment. They will develop a self-sustaining research program with the support of industry partners in the area(s) of plant, food, soil, or environmental microbiology that includes peer-reviewed publications. Specific areas of expertise should include the ability to investigate the plant, food, soil, or environmental microbiology, food safety using microbiological approaches. They are expected to use a systems approach which complements the research programs of other Faculty of Agriculture members. Collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged.

The selected candidate should also demonstrate an interest to work with other scientists to investigate plant, food, soil, or environmental microbiology. A demonstrated ability or potential to work in multidisciplinary teams, to publish original research in peer reviewed journals, to obtain competitive research grants; and to teach and effectively communicate in both verbal and written formats is required. Demonstrated excellence in conducting research and technology transfer, the ability to supervise graduate student research and the training of highly qualified persons, strong leadership skills, high integrity, excellent communication, and interpersonal skills, and an ability to work in co-operation with a number of university, government, industry and producer/processor groups are desirable. Experience in post-secondary teaching is a highly desirable asset. Enthusiasm for university teaching is required.

The position plays a major teaching and research role in an area related to plant, food, soil, or environmental microbiology with the Department of Plant, Food, and Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Agriculture. The incumbent will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in microbiology, food microbiology, agricultural and food microbiomes, and related subjects and is expected to modify and update the courses as needed to reflect the needs and interests of students. The success of the research program is mainly dependent upon acquiring external funds for the establishment of infrastructure and for research operations, as well as networking to build collaborative research in relevant complementary disciplines with other researchers of the Faculty of Agriculture and beyond. The position requires sound judgement, focus, initiative, and accountability to ensure efficient engagement of appropriate industry partners and research collaborators in the generation of new knowledge. The incumbent must be able to deliver timely research results and identify the needs for research and teaching and to coordinate the required time and resources. In addition, the incumbent must be proactive and have the initiative and capability to acquire competitive funds from provincial and national granting agencies.

The incumbent will direct and manage a research program and be responsible for the acquisition and management of research funding, the recruitment, training and supervision of staff, assuring these staff have the required health and safety training oversight of the ordering and receiving of research supplies, maintaining inventories of equipment, apparatus, and chemicals, the maintenance of laboratory records, equipment logbooks, safety protocols, and other safety related information and records, completing field trails and sample collection, and various other activities related to general laboratory maintenance. Reporting and peer-reviewed publication and research results is critical.

Eligibility for membership in the provincial Institute of Agrology is desirable.
