Job Description

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus, is accepting applications for a part-time (50%) Lecturer in support of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) program. This position will be for a 1-, 2-, or 3-year term with the possibility for renewal, subject to the availability of funding and demonstrated excellence in teaching and service. The preferred starting date for the position is January 1, 2022 or shortly thereafter.

The Lecturer will be expected to teach three Naval Architecture courses at introductory and advanced levels. Topics include Marine Hydrodynamics, Ship Design, Ship Structures, Marine Engineering and Ship Production. Specific course assignments will be determined by the qualifications of the candidate, the needs of the program, and will be at the discretion of the Department Head. In addition to course development and teaching responsibilities, this position is expected to fulfill service duties as assigned by the Department Head. The successful candidate will hold a Master’s or Ph.D. degree in either Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, and have a strong commitment to high-quality teaching. Relevant industrial experience in the marine sector, and related fields is an asset. Candidates are expected to have passion for teaching, excellent communication skills, and working knowledge of modern teaching methods and supporting tools. The successful candidate must have, or be able to obtain, a P.Eng., or EIT designation with Engineers and Geoscientists BC before teaching in the position.
