The Department of Electronics invites applications from qualified candidates for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier 2 appointment in Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning January 1, 2023. The successful candidate will work with the Faculty of Engineering and Design to prepare and submit an application to the CRC Secretariat.
The candidate will be expected to establish and lead an independent externally funded research program in the field of Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors including collaborations with internal and external partners. This is an exceptional opportunity to assume operation of Carleton University’s Advanced Photonic Components Laboratory established by Tier 1 Canada Research Chair Professor Jacques Albert. The candidate will be required to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels and supervise student projects and thesis research. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the operation and development of the academic unit and the University including program and curriculum development.
Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.

About the Academic Unit
The Department of Electronics is a research-intensive department with an active community including 30 full time faculty. The department is primarily responsible for delivering undergraduate programs in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, and Sustainable and Renewable Energy Engineering and supports several other programs within the faculty.
The position requires a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, and current membership in a professional engineering association in Canada or ability to obtain membership within five (5) years of appointment. Candidates should provide evidence of research and teaching excellence. The candidate requires a background in fabrication of fiber Bragg gratings using phase mask methods, and use of fiber gratings in sensing applications.
