청소년 기술 개발 장학금

Meet Kavina Kaur Gill, a recent recipient of our Youth Skills Development Scholarship!

Ravina will be using her scholarship to attend courses that will allow her to participate in the co-op program at UBC, where she is enrolled as a computer science major.

SCWIST Scholarships for Youth

Our Youth Skills Development Scholarship is available for young women aged 16-21 in Canada. The scholarship is awarded to cover professional development costs, such as attending a Science Fair or participating in science-related camps or courses.

From eMentoring to STEM Opportunities

“As a student pursuing a STEM career, the most valuable knowledge comes not from university lectures, but from hands-on experience within the industry itself,” Ravina said. “This experience is often only available after graduation. However, my Physics 12 teacher recommended I join SCWIST’s eMentoring program, where my amazing mentor, Grace, introduced me to co-operative education (co-op).”

Co-op is a program offered at many universities that allows students to apply their skills in the industry through work terms. In most co-op programs, students alternate between work and study terms, gaining comprehensive experience in their desired field.

“I didn’t expect to find such a perfect match in my mentor; Grace, with her extensive experience in mechanical engineering, shared insights from her daughters’ university journeys. It was through Grace that I first learned about co-op, as both her daughters participated in co-op programs at their respective universities. After researching the co-op program at UBC, I realized how beneficial it would be for my future as a computer science major,” explained Ravina.
