SUMMARY:Quantum Leaps Career Conference - Geology
DESCRIPTION:This is a career conference event for high school girls to interact with women professionals in STEM and learn about science careers.\n\n\nSCWIST Quantum Leaps is a virtual career conference uniquely designed for girls from grades 8-12 interested in or curious to explore careers in science\, technology\, engineering\, and math (STEM). This conference gives girls a glimpse into what women in STEM fields do in their careers. \nDuring these events\, girls can meet women professionals who have been successful in their STEM fields and meet other like-minded girls who have similar aspirations and interests. This event will help them know more about the STEM fields they are interested in and discover new STEM fields. Quantum Leaps also aims to aid students in the transition between high school and post-secondary education. \nThis particular Quantum Leaps event will focus on women professionals working in careers related to Geology. Within Geology\, hydrogeology which includes protecting groundwater from the byproducts of mining will be a focus. Another focus within hydrogeology will be finding water sources within remote gold mines. Another topic within geology will include underground mining\, rock mechanics and geological engineering. The convergence of projects related to solid waste\, climate mitigation and adaptation\, asset management and wastewater treatment for the project manager of a city will be discussed. \nDid these professionals in geology have a fixed plan for what they would like to do five years after high school? How do they ease into changing their career focus? Did they know that they wanted to pursue these careers when they were in university? Girls will get the opportunity to interact with these women to get the answers they need at the event. \n\n\nSPEAKERS\n \n\n\n\nAlexandra Hughes\n \nAlexandra is a hydrogeologist at an engineering consulting company. As a hydrogeologist\, she helps companies manage their water. Most of her work is for remote gold mines\, where the majority of water is sourced from groundwater (aka. water from deep underground). She helps to find water sources to supply their employee camp (needed for drinking\, cooking\, showering)\, to manage the water needed to process the gold ore\, and to protect the groundwater from dangerous chemicals that can be byproducts of mining. Most recently\, she has been using 3D groundwater flow models to help understand how the groundwater moves. These models allow her to predict out into the future to evaluate if the mining activities will have negative impacts on nearby lakes and rivers. For her job\, she gets to spend lots of time outdoors in really cool places\, but has also been able to hone her modelling and technical writing skills in the office. \n\n\n\nSierra Mercer\n \nSierra Mercer is the Mining Manager for the Critical Industrial Technologies program at the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI). With a background in geological engineering and underground mining\, she has worked as a ground control engineer\, utilizing her expertise in rock mechanics and geotechnical analysis. Sierra has also applied advanced technologies such as drones and LiDAR systems for underground mapping and mine safety. In her current role\, she helps Ontario-based companies adopt innovative technologies such as AI\, robotics\, and 5G to advance the mining sector. \n\n\n\nKatelyn Pocha\nKatelyn is a Project Manager for the City of Cranbrook and has been with the city since 2015. She is a Professional Geoscientist with EGBC\, and prior to her time in Cranbrook\, worked in mineral exploration\, site reclamation and remediation. Katelyn’s current role as a Project Manager includes leading a variety of projects related to solid waste\, climate mitigation and adaptation\, asset management\, and wastewater treatment. Throughout her career\, she has enjoyed travelling throughout British Columbia and Alberta. She enjoys working in local government and spending her free time outdoors hiking and biking with her family.

SUMMARY:Powerfully Negotiating Your Value
DESCRIPTION:Learn negotiation techniques that help women achieve an average of a 25%+ increase in their compensation packages.\n\n\nPowerfully Negotiating Your Value \nThis workshop will help you frame your compensation ask. Sophie Warwick and Jillian Climie\, co-founders of The Thoughtful Co\, will walk through their compensation negotiation template that helps their clients achieve a +25% increase in their compensation package on average\, and practice using it with other attendees. \nKey takeaways include: \n\nWhat elements should\, and should not be brought up during a negotiation.\nA powerful “script” to help guide you in all future negotiations.\nUnderstanding how to articulate your unique strengths.\nHow to effectively prepare before a negotiation.\nHow women can combat the bias they face in negotiations.\n\nThis workshop is led by Jillian Climie\, who has spent her career in executive compensation\, and Sophie Warwick\, who specializes in developing in-house gender equity policies and chairing Employee Resource Groups. \n\n\nAbout this event \nThis event was made possible by SCWIST’s new project\, Agency and Action to Prevent Gender-Based Violence in STEM Workplaces. \nIn the lead-up to International Equal Pay Day\, this event aims to equip women with essential negotiation skills to bridge the gender pay gap\, a significant global issue affecting women’s economic equality. \nThe same systemic biases that lead to pay inequity also contribute to workplace cultures where harassment and bullying are allowed to exist. By providing practical strategies and fostering confidence\, SCWIST continues to advocate for fair and equal compensation\, reinforcing the importance of addressing these interconnected issues to ensure women receive the pay and respect they deserve. \n\n\n\nSophie Warwick (she/her) \nSophie Warwick\, Co-Founder of the Thoughtful Co\, specializes in developing in-house gender equity policies and chairing Employee Resource Groups and advocacy groups. She uses her data analysis expertise from her engineering background to define targets and track growth and retention. In 2018\, she Co-Founded Women in Consulting Engineering (WCE)\, a non-profit organization with over 500 members and monthly events to support and empower women in engineering. She co-founded The Thoughtful Co so she could build more gender inclusive workplaces and build representation of women at senior levels in all industries. \n\n\n\nJillian Climie (she/her) \nJillian Climie\, Co-Founder of The Thoughtful Co\, has spent her career advising and leading teams in executive compensation and corporate governance\, both as a consultant\, and in-house at two global retailers. Most recently at Lululemon\, she led the global equity compensation and executive compensation programs. After taking a pause\, she realized she wanted more of three things in her professional life: thoroughness\, passion and freedom. She Co-Founded The Thoughtful Co so she can leverage her niche and technical experience\, coupled with her passion for gender equity\, to empower women to get paid what they deserve.

SUMMARY:Wonder Women Networking Evening
DESCRIPTION:Grow your professional network as you meet and mingle with students\, professionals and STEM leaders.\n\n\nThe Wonder Women Networking Evening will be hosted on Whova. Registration will NOT take place on Eventbrite. To secure your spot\, please use this link. \n \nThe Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST) is excited to once again host the Wonder Women Networking Evening. This networking event has been going on for more than 33 years\, and this is our fourth year hosting it online for women across Canada. \nDesigned specifically for university students\, early career professionals and those considering a career change\, you’ll connect with some incredible “Wonder Women” in STEM who are successful in their fields and passionate about sharing their expertise with the next generation of STEM professionals. \n \n“Networking is not about just connecting people. It’s about connecting people with people\, people with ideas\, and people with opportunities.” – Michele Jannae\n \nWe’ll be meeting on Whova\, and using breakout rooms for a few rounds of networking between attendees and Wonder Women mentors. Each room will be hosted by two Wonder Women in the same or similar fields\, and attendees will be assigned to rooms based on the fields they are interested in. You’re free to select as many topics as you like from our list\, but please note that we can only use 2-3 of them to assign you to 2-3 different rooms. You’ll receive the “WWNE Field Guide” ahead of time to learn about the various Wonder Women mentors. \nNot sure how to network\, and virtually? Not to worry – just show up with a question or two\, ready to listen\, but we’ll start the night off with some networking “how-tos” and provide some tips along the way. \nThis event was created for those who identify as women in STEM fields\, due to a lack of networking opportunities for women. To further our goal of supporting those under-represented in STEM\, we invite participants and mentors who identify as trans\, genderqueer\, non-binary\, two-spirit\, or gender questioning as long as the framing of the event as a women’s networking space does not feel incongruent with your identity. \nDon’t miss this lively evening of networking and fun—register to save your spot today! \nThe Wonder Women Networking Evening will be hosted on Whova. Registration will NOT take place on Eventbrite. To secure your spot\, please use this link.

SUMMARY:Quantum Leaps Career Conference - Structural and Chemical Engineering
Quantum Leaps also aims to aid students in the transition between high school and higher education. \nThis particular Quantum Leaps event will focus on women professionals working in careers related to engineering – particularly Structural engineering and Chemical engineering. They also have expertise in science communication and facilitating learning. Did they have a fixed plan for what they would like to do five years after high school? How do they ease into changing their career focus? Did they know that they wanted to pursue these careers when they were in university? Girls will get the opportunity to interact with these women to get the answers they need at the event. \n\n\nAGENDA\n\n6:00-6:25: Speaker 1 and Q&A session\n6:25-6:55: Speaker 2 and Q&A session\n6 :55-7:00 Conclusion\n\n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\n\n\nMarie Wood\n \nMarie Wood\, P.Eng is a professional engineer in the field of Structural Engineering. SUMMARY:The Power of Why
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn how to leverage the power of curiosity to continuously find – or create – meaning in one’s work.\n\n\nSince 1981\, SCWIST has made great strides in promoting and empowering women in STEM. When you register\, please consider adding a small donation to support our programs so all interested women and girls can see where a future in STEM can take them. \n\n\nThe Power of Why\n\n\nFor many women\, a career in STEM is rooted in the desire to have a positive impact on the world. But when you finally make it into the workforce\, you’re drowning in paperwork and struggling to connect your work with its impact on society. In this session\, I explore how to leverage the power of curiosity to continuously find – or create – meaning in one’s work. I share the evolution of my personal “why” throughout my career\, and how curiosity has enabled me to find new ways to create a positive impact – whether on the people around me or the products I build. \n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\n\n\nJasmine Shaw\n\n\nPhoto and Video Consent\nBy registering for the event\, you understand that the session may be video recorded and/ or photos will be taken for use in SCWIST digital communication platforms\, including but not limited to the SCWIST website\, e-newsletter\, Twitter\, Facebook\, Instagram\, Youtube\, and others. SUMMARY:Creating Space for the Change you Envision
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn how to harness change\, rather than be hindered by it\, to unlock opportunities for growth in one’s career.\n\n\nSince 1981\, SCWIST has made great strides in promoting and empowering women in STEM. When you register\, please consider adding a small donation to support our programs so all interested women and girls can see where a future in STEM can take them. \n\n\nCreating Space for the Change you Envision\n\n\nIn the fast-paced world that is a STEM career\, change is about the only constant that you can rely on – gone are the days of working at the same company for 30 years. In this session\, I explore how to harness change\, rather than be hindered by it\, to unlock opportunities for growth in one’s career. I offer a new perspective for looking at career change through a lens of learning\, rather than seeing it as a failure. I share my personal experiences with pivoting several times throughout my career – from a degree in biomedical engineering to working in defence\, from defence to enterprise SaaS\, from a soul-crushing layoff to a Senior Project Manager – and how I used those redirects as critical learning moments to identify what I want\, and more importantly\, what I don’t want\, out of my career.
