DESCRIPTION:This is a career conference event for high school girls to interact with women professionals in STEM and learn about science careers.\n\n\nSCWIST Quantum Leaps is a virtual career conference uniquely designed for girls from grades 8-12 interested in or curious to explore careers in science\, technology\, engineering\, and math (STEM). This conference gives girls a glimpse into what women in STEM fields do in their careers. \nDuring these events\, girls can meet women professionals who have been successful in their STEM fields and meet other like-minded girls who have similar aspirations and interests. This event will help them know more about the STEM fields they are interested in and discover new STEM fields. Quantum Leaps also aims to aid students in the transition between high school and higher education. \nThis particular Quantum Leaps event will focus on women professionals working in careers related to Biotechnology and Engineering. Within Biotechnology\, genetically modified genes associated with diseases such as Alzheimers will be discussed. Another topic will include potential alternatives to antibiotics and research of synthetically made peptides. Within engineering\, software engineering will be discussed. Specifically\, user-interface related frontend development and cyber security will be the focus. \nDid these professionals in engineering have a fixed plan for what they would like to do five years after high school? How do they ease into changing their career focus? Did they know that they wanted to pursue these careers when they were in university? Girls will get the opportunity to interact with these women to get the answers they need at the event. \n\n\n\nSusana Chung\nSusana Chung is currently in her final year of the UBC-BCIT Honors in Biotechnology program. Another focus involves learning and memory in rodents\, as well as perception and memory in brain damaged individuals. A third focus will be clinical trials and the effectiveness of medical interventions\, as well as medical writing. \nDid these professionals in neuroscience have a fixed plan for what they would like to do five years after high school? How do they ease into changing their career focus? Did they know that they wanted to pursue these careers when they were in university? Girls will get the opportunity to interact with these women to get the answers they need at the event. \n\n\nAGENDA\n\n6:00-6:20: Speaker 1 and Q&A session\n6:20-6:40: Speaker 2 and Q&A session\n6:40-7:00 Speaker 3 and Q&A session\n\n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\n\n\nDr. Payal Arya\nPayal is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at Bentley University\, where she is immersed in studying diverse business models within the pharmaceutical industry. She holds a Doctorate in Biology\, with my doctoral research focusing on the intricate dynamics of protein-protein interactions in human cells. \nPreviously\, during her tenure at Wellesley College\, she explored the fascinating world of songbirds\, particularly how they learn songs from their parents—a process analogous to how human infants acquire language from their parents. This research delved into the neural underpinnings of learning multiple songs in birds\, shedding light on potential parallels in human language acquisition. \nThroughout her academic journey\, she has been committed to continuous learning\, consistently broadening her research scope to encompass various topics that bridge biological sciences and business. This multidisciplinary approach not only enriches her knowledge but also enhances her ability to contribute uniquely to each field she explores. \n\n\n\nNatasha Campbell\n \nNatasha Campbell is a clinical trialist with over 10 years experience in the industry. Her roles have ranged from Clinical Research Coordinator\, to Clinical Trials Manager\, to Medical Writer. SUMMARY:Wonder Women Networking Evening
DESCRIPTION:Grow your professional network as you meet and mingle with students\, professionals and STEM leaders.\n\n\nThe Wonder Women Networking Evening will be hosted on Whova. Registration will NOT take place on Eventbrite. To secure your spot\, please use this link. \n \nThe Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST) is excited to once again host the Wonder Women Networking Evening. This networking event has been going on for more than 33 years\, and this is our fourth year hosting it online for women across Canada. \nDesigned specifically for university students\, early career professionals and those considering a career change\, you’ll connect with some incredible “Wonder Women” in STEM who are successful in their fields and passionate about sharing their expertise with the next generation of STEM professionals. \n \n“Networking is not about just connecting people. It’s about connecting people with people\, people with ideas\, and people with opportunities.” – Michele Jannae\n \nWe’ll be meeting on Whova\, and using breakout rooms for a few rounds of networking between attendees and Wonder Women mentors. Each room will be hosted by two Wonder Women in the same or similar fields\, and attendees will be assigned to rooms based on the fields they are interested in. You’re free to select as many topics as you like from our list\, but please note that we can only use 2-3 of them to assign you to 2-3 different rooms. You’ll receive the “WWNE Field Guide” ahead of time to learn about the various Wonder Women mentors. \nNot sure how to network\, and virtually? Not to worry – just show up with a question or two\, ready to listen\, but we’ll start the night off with some networking “how-tos” and provide some tips along the way. \nThis event was created for those who identify as women in STEM fields\, due to a lack of networking opportunities for women. To further our goal of supporting those under-represented in STEM\, we invite participants and mentors who identify as trans\, genderqueer\, non-binary\, two-spirit\, or gender questioning as long as the framing of the event as a women’s networking space does not feel incongruent with your identity. \nDon’t miss this lively evening of networking and fun—register to save your spot today! \nThe Wonder Women Networking Evening will be hosted on Whova. Registration will NOT take place on Eventbrite. To secure your spot\, please use this link.

SUMMARY:Creating Space for the Change you Envision
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn how to harness change\, rather than be hindered by it\, to unlock opportunities for growth in one’s career.\n\n\nSince 1981\, SCWIST has made great strides in promoting and empowering women in STEM. When you register\, please consider adding a small donation to support our programs so all interested women and girls can see where a future in STEM can take them. \n\n\nCreating Space for the Change you Envision\n\n\nIn the fast-paced world that is a STEM career\, change is about the only constant that you can rely on – gone are the days of working at the same company for 30 years. In this session\, I explore how to harness change\, rather than be hindered by it\, to unlock opportunities for growth in one’s career. I offer a new perspective for looking at career change through a lens of learning\, rather than seeing it as a failure. I share my personal experiences with pivoting several times throughout my career – from a degree in biomedical engineering to working in defence\, from defence to enterprise SaaS\, from a soul-crushing layoff to a Senior Project Manager – and how I used those redirects as critical learning moments to identify what I want\, and more importantly\, what I don’t want\, out of my career. \n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\n\n\nJasmine Shaw\n\n\nPhoto and Video Consent\nBy registering for the event\, you understand that the session may be video recorded and/ or photos will be taken for use in SCWIST digital communication platforms\, including but not limited to the SCWIST website\, e-newsletter\, Twitter\, Facebook\, Instagram\, Youtube\, and others.
