Hi IWIS members,
Hope you all had a great long weekend and are ready for the snow in Vancouver by the end of this week.
We wanted to thank those of you who attended our first Café Scientifique event and update those who could not make it. The event was a huge success with about 50 attendees and 3 hours of discussions, networking, great information from experts in the field of cancer and aging and of course delicious food!
The night started off with a great presentation about the history of cancer and prevention tips from Dr Philip Beer. His presentation was simple and easy to understand while at the same time filled with information on how prevention can save many people from aging and cancer. Following the talk, members of the public and other scientists in the room had a great discussion about the funding of research or treatment of cancers.
The second speaker of the night was Dr. Gerry Krystal. Gerry is known for his excellent talks and ability to connect with audience members of any scientific level. He presented his research results about the importance of high protein diets and the benefits of a healthier diet on aging and cancer. Discussion that lasted for about an hour followed his talk. It was informative and for some of us very eye-opening!
The atmosphere of the event was very warm and speakers welcomed any questions the public and scientists had. Overall we had a great night and received positive feedback from the attendees. We have already had many requests to reach out to more members of the public and have similar events more often!
See you all at the next IWIS event and thanks again for being part of IWIS.
Your committee members
